Alligator Reef Lighthouse – A snorkelers paradise alligator reef lighthouse sets 4 nautical miles offshore from Islamorada in the Florida Keys. The 136 ft lighthouse got its name from the Navy schooner, USS Alligator that sunk nearby in 1822. While out hunting Pirates it ran sure the shallow coral reef in sunk. The lighthouse was erected shortly after to warn ships of the shallow water nearby.
