This beautiful lagoon lies between Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island, which connects to the Indian River at its south end. During World War II the lagoon was used by the military to train pilots on the large seaplanes that would take off from the Banana River Naval Air Station. Named by the local Timucuan Indians who once lived along its shore for the wild bananas that grew along its banks.
